Preparation is key, we take every step necessary to ensure a long lasting and durable finish. Below is a brief description of our process.
The first step in painting your cabinets is removing your cabinet fronts and making sure to label each individual front to make reassembly easier.
Because each cabinet hinge is adjusted for the door it holds, we recommend using blue painters tape to label each hinge and secure to the inside of the cabinet box so it does not get misplaced.
Degreasing and cleaning is a very important step while preparing your cabinets for paint.
Because kitchen cabinets can often contain oils or contamination from cooking, it is absolutely necessary to remove these imperfections prior to painting.
One of our favorite products for this is “Krud Kutter” a cleaner and degreaser. You can use a brush that attaches to an electric drill to make this process easier and effective.
Sanding your cabinets is the next step in the process and ensures that the primer and paint will adhere to the cabinet, resulting in a more durable and scratch-resistant finish. A medium grit sanding block is perfect for the average DIYer.
Using the correct primer is extremely important when painting cabinets. One of our favorite primers is BIN primer made by Zinsser. It is a shellac-based primer and is one of the most durable primers which can be verified by a scratch test. Two coats of primer provides a solid foundation for your paint to adhere and should be followed by another sanding prior to paint.
Once the cabinets have been degreased, primed, and sanded it is time to finally apply the paint. A roller and brush can be used to paint cabinets, but we prefer to spray them in order to get a professional finish. One of our favorite paints for cabinets is Sherwin William’s Emerald Urethane Trim Enamel. We have found this paint to be exceptional in creating a factory like finish that is durable and consistent.
